Like a garden of roses under the best of conditions, the automotive industry has flourished rapidly and extensively. It is one of those industries whose demand is likely to stay high as long as mankind values the significance of transportation. However, with fast cars in broad country lanes –a serious issue had been taken in to account by the automotive manufacturers: automotive safeties.
The breakthrough came at around the 1950’s when Volvo invented the three pin seat belts. A fairly simple yet sophisticated invention which capitalizes the laws of physics and provide a great deal of safety for the people in the car. Nils Ivar Bohlin was the genius behind this invention-and by 1968 seatbelts were made essentials for automobiles.
Another awesome and innovative safety for automotive was the airbag. The idea is simple- during the crash a big cushion of air pops out and reduces the force of impact on the driver and the passengers. The working of the air bag is as follows: a chemical ignites a harmless gas ( for example: argon) and causes the bags to inflate rapidly. Although the first air bags came around 1968, the origin of its patent to back as far as 1950! Even before seatbelts.
With the advancement of technology, today we have the SRS (supplement restrain system) airbag which is basically the airbag and seat belts working together as a team and provide maximum possible safety. Although this is not quintessential for every vehicles, but hey better safe than sorry!
Another safety feature of automobiles, one which is the most important yet the most neglected: the crumple zone! The plastic on the front and back of your car which are there to be crushed , just for your safety! If you think about it your car sacrifices its life for you- no wonder people pay millions of dollars for these magnificent creations of the automotive industries.
Now, as I have mentioned earlier, the outcome and design of the the safety features of a car are very much depended on Physics. I would like to give a fairly simple idea on how this works. So basically what it does is it increases the time of impact. There is the formula in physics-force= change in momentum divided by time taken. Since the time taken is being increased the force acting will be lowered! Simple yet life saving

Automobile manufacturers thrive to provide the maximum safety features on a car so that their customers can feel the breeze of the highways with a mind free of worries. Car accidents take life annually at a drastic rate. So we must utilize these advanced safety features of vehicles, wear helmets when necessary and of course follow the traffic rules obediently.
